WHAT IS HYDROPONICS? Hydroponics is an alternative way to grow plants- without soil. Through the use of nutrient solutions (water with added fertilisers) and in some cases, an artificial medium such as perlite, sand, or rockwool, plants can be grown in trays or growth pods. These systems can be categorised in a number of ways: liquid systems (which only use nutrient solutions with no artificial medium for root support), and aggregate systems (which use both nutrient solutions and artificial mediums), and the system can furthermore be open (the nutrient solution will not be recycled after it has interacted with the plants), or closed (the remaining nutrient solution is recycled or recovered and used again, either for the same system or another).
